The Mother Went Into Coma After A C-Section. But One Nurse’s Idea Changed Everything.

“Hearing her cry gave me something to fight for.” Here’s a story that really shows that you should never give up on loved ones.

After suffering from severe headaches in September last year, Shelly Cawley was forced to undergo an emergency Caesarean section.

The C-Section led to the successful birth of a healthy baby girl for Shelly and husband Jeremy.

But while daughter Rylan was born, the new 23-year-old mum didn’t fare so well. She got a blood clot in her leg during surgery and ended up in a coma.

“The idea of going from the highest of emotions of having that child born (…) to the next moment where you think you’re going to be saying good bye to your wife was just.. I was numb,” husband Jeremy told Fox46.

Family and friends visited and tried in vain to get her to wake from her coma, but nothing helped.

“The doctors told me that if Shelley wasn’t able to do something on her own, they didn’t think they’d be able to keep her alive until the morning,” Jeremy told Buzzfeed News.

Then a nurse that was helping treat Shelly had an idea.

“We knew skin to skin contact is very beneficial to an infant, so we thought, why not try it for a mom,” nurse Ashley Manus told WCNC-TV.

When little Rylan was placed on her mother’s chest, the newborn became so content that she fell asleep. But Jeremy and several nurses gathered and decided to try to get little Rylan to cry. And it’s indeed when she began to cry that something incredible happened.

“They say that they saw a spike in my vitals when she cried. They think that me hearing her subconsciously gave my body and my subconscious a reason to fight, that I knew that I still needed to be there for my baby,” Shelley told Fox46.

Within moments of contact with her daughter Shelly’s condition improved and she was out of her coma.
“Her crying was able to give me something to fight for,” she told WCNC-TV.

“I remember staring at Rylan’s face and thinking she is the most beautiful baby in the world. I know every mom feels that way, but I felt like we had a special connection because of everything that had happened,” Shelly told Buzzfeed.

Shelly gradually recovered sufficiently and was able to leave her hospital bed.

And eventually the hospital too.

A year has passed since the miracle and Rylan has grown like a champ.

“What a difference a year makes!” Shelly wrote on her Facebook page. We are so happy that we got to share how the events of last year have changed our lives for the better.”

The family said that it is extremely grateful to the hospital staff whom did not give up hope and were willing to try everything to get Shelly to wake up.
